What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been shown to help people overcome emotional distress caused by trauma, depression, and/or anxiety.

The therapy uses eye movements to retrain the brain’s memory system and can be helpful in reducing symptoms for those struggling with these issues. It has also been shown effective in treating other mental health issues.

What Makes EMDR Therapy Effective?

If your life feels out of control or your body is in an almost constant state of panic, you may be wondering if EMDR therapy is right for you. EMDR is a highly effective treatment that can help you rewire your brain so that negative memories no longer trigger strong emotions.

You do not have to talk in detail about the event(s) and usually, fewer sessions are needed than traditional talk therapy. EMDR allows your brain and body to process or “digest” the overload, jumpstarting the natural process your brain uses for healing.

It can improve the way you feel about life and how you view yourself.

EMDR isn't just for people who have lived through big-T trauma. It’s important you know EMDR can be for almost anything that is disturbing or distressing, including a traumatic event or series of events.

“Attention [is] given to a negative image, belief, and body feeling related to this event [or events], and then to a positive belief that would indicate the issue was resolved.” EMDR helps resolve the effects of trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and more.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

If you are struggling with the effects of trauma, depression, and/or anxiety, EMDR therapy may be a good treatment option for you. EMDR therapy was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1979 as an alternative treatment for people who had experienced severe trauma. It has since become one of the most widely used treatments for PTSD.

EMDR therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses bilateral stimulation, which can be in the form of eye movements, sounds, or tactile sensations, to help people process and heal from traumatic experiences. EMDR therapy is thought to work by helping to reduce the intensity of negative memories and emotions, and by increasing positive ones.

Working With Our EMDR Trained Therapists in Richardson, TX

During EMDR therapy, you will work with your therapist to identify a negative memory or event that is causing you distress. Once this memory or event has been identified, you will begin the bilateral/dual attention stimulation (your choice of eye movements, which will last for 20-30 seconds).

After the bilateral stimulation has been completed, you and your therapist will discuss what you experienced during the stimulation. You will then move on to the next memory or event. This process will be repeated until all of the memories or events that are causing you distress have been processed.

EMDR therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for trauma, anxiety, and depression. If you are struggling with any of these issues, EMDR therapy may be a good option for you.

FAQs About EMDR Therapy in Richardson & Dallas, TX

What is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR intensive is a type of therapy in which a person undergoes multiple EMDR sessions in a short period of time, typically over the course of several days to months. This type of therapy is often used for people who have experienced severe trauma or who have not responded well to traditional forms of therapy.

Rather than months with the weekly model of therapy treatment, intensive EMDR therapy is an efficient technique to work more quickly through the pain you're tired of lugging around with you. Intensives provide personalized treatment plans designed to support your preferred schedule and timeline for your treatment goals. It accelerates the process of therapy, so you can feel better more quickly.

EMDR is not just for trauma; it is also used for anxiety, depression, and other situations that cause distress or bother a person as well as performance enhancement to excel in areas such as athletics, business, and even relationships.

How is the EMDR Intensive Structured?

Each program is different depending on your availability. Some clients like to do it all in one week whereas some clients space it out over a month. Each program includes a 90-120 minute intake/pre-intensive session to ensure you are a good fit for EMDR+ Intensives. This is followed by a 90-120 minute pre-intensive/intensive session. Based on what we both feel you would benefit from there would be 1 or more intensive sessions of 120-180 min intensive session. Concluding intensives you can choose to have a final post-intensive session to process and integrate the work done during the intensive OR continue with individual sessions as needed.

Also included is a personalized pre/post treatment workbook. You will be asked to complete certain exercises prior to the intensive to help you prepare and maximize the benefit of the treatment as well as post-intensive exercises to support your continued progress.

How Much Does an EMDR Intensive Cost?

The total cost of the EMDR intensive work varies based on number of hours needed as well as whether you are able to meet during the day (9am-5pm is $250/hour) vs outside of business hours (evening and weekend appointments are $300/hour).

Janette offers 45 min, 90 min or 2 hour EMDR sessions (See FAQ for fees). For more information about pricing, see FAQ or please contact our office and schedule a free consultation.

Is EMDR Therapy in the Dallas Area Covered by My Insurance?

There are no guarantees. Canvas Counseling and Wellness PLLC is not in-network with insurance, so you may choose to pay out-of-pocket and possibly be reimbursed for out-of-network benefits.

At your request, we can provide a special receipt called a Superbill which includes important information about the service provided that you can then submit to your insurance company.

Prior to starting sessions, I recommend you talk with your insurance to find out if they reimburse/cover for the following billing codes and if so, how much:

Intake (readiness for EMDR Intensive): 90791 (55-60 min)

90837 (53+ min)

Sometimes they will only cover the first 60 min of a session, so you would pay the rest out of pocket. Intensives are something I have done myself as a client and I have found great value in them. It is an investment, so please let me know if there are any questions, I would be happy to answer them or help find the answer for you.

If you are interested in scheduling an EMDR intensive, please contact us today to schedule your free consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!
